Home Health Aide Requirements in Texas
To earn a home health care certificate in the great state of Texas, you must complete a training program that includes at least 75 hours of classroom training and 16 hours of clinical hands-on experience in a home, nursing home, lab or hospital.
HHAs working in Medicaid-reimbursed facilities or Medicare also must complete 12 hours of continuing education for every 12-month period.
There are additional requirements for home health aides to work in a home health agency that is licensed by the state of Texas. The requirements include the following:
- At least 1 year of full-time experience providing care to a direct patient in a nursing or hospital setting;
- have 1 year of full-time experience providing care to a direct patient in an agency setting within the last 5 years;
- have valid documentation from the dean of school of nursing or a director of a program stating that you are a nursing student competent in basic nursing skills;
- successfully completed HHA training and competency evaluation program;
- be listed on the Texas Department of Human Services nurse aide registry without any negative findings;
- provided home health aide services within the past 24 months
A qualified RN will also perform the competency evaluation with oral, written, and observational tests. Once you pass, you will be on the Texas Nurse Aide Registry. You can then apply to jobs as a certified home health aide in Texas.
If you are on the nurse aide registry of another state that complies with the Federal regulations, you may be able to qualify for reciprocal treatment as long as you complete the documentation and pass the skills test.

Texas Health School
The Nurse Aid program at Texas Health School consists of 100 hours of instruction – 60 hours in the classroom and 40 hours in a clinical setting.
The program equips its students with the skills to provide basic patient care in homes, hospitals, and long-term care facilities.
At the end of the course, students will have learned:
- how to take vital signs
- plan nutritional meals
- how to communicate with patients effectively
